 I noticed this, and was wondering at first whether it was a glitch. Apparently not.

In any case, one way of checking if a profile is active or not is to click on their friends list (standards can view this), and sort it by "friends since." This will display the most recently added friend, as well as the date when that happened. This will allow you to know that they were at least active up to that date, if not later.
